Google Summer of Code 2021

We’re really excited to announce our Google Summer of Code (GSoC) and Google Summer of Docs (GSoD) students for 2021. This year’s batch of students includes two GSoC students and one GSoD student. We’re also really quite excited that one of our students from last year, Amr Elsersy, decided to return for a second summer of software fun! This year Amr Elsersy and Atharva Pusalkar will be adding features to Ignition Gazebo, while our Google Season of Docs student, Shyngyskhan Abilkassov, will be working to improve tutorials and documentation for ROS 2. We asked the students to share a little bit about themselves and what they plan to work on over the summer.

Amr Elsersy

Amr is a senior computer engineering student at Ain Shams University in Egypt who is passionate about computer vision and computer graphics. During GSoC 2021, he will be working on Ignition Gazebo developing a machine learning tool to generate datasets to be used in training DL models. The project involves creating the required sensors such as labels camera and bounding boxes camera, and providing APIs to generate datasets easily. You can follow his progress on his Github account or on LinkedIn.

Shyngyskhan Abilkassov

Shyngyskhan recently completed his bachelor's degree in Robotics and Mechatronics from Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan. His interests span control for mobile robots, computer vision, and deep learning. Previously he contributed to research on robotized autonomous truck development at Astana Laboratory for Robotic and Intelligent Systems, and devoted his bachelor's thesis to pedestrian aware navigation for skid-steering mobile robots. He also has a huge interest in open source robotics and participated in various contributions.

During his participation in the Google Summer of Docs program he will contribute to ROS2 documentation and write tutorials on tf2 and ros2 launch packages under supervision of Alejandro Hernández and Audrow Nash. This effort aims to help developers to learn concepts on ROS2 transformations and launch files by doing so in an easy and interactive way. You can follow his progress by checking out his LinkedIn Account and his Github profile.

Atharva Pusalkar

Atharva is a third-year engineering student from DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering, Mumbai, India. He likes working on autonomous robots and is currently a member of DJS Racing, a team building a self-driving Formula Student car. He has also conducted workshops on topics such as computer vision, sensor fusion, and ROS at his team. During GSoC 2021, Atharva will be working on porting existing widget features to Ignition Gazebo. You can follow along with his progress on his LinkedIn and Github profiles.
