OSRF joins the Eclipse Foundation
The Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF, Open Robotics) is very proud to announce that it has joined the Eclipse Foundation.
The Eclipse Foundation is one of the premier open-source software foundations in the world. Originally created by IBM in 2001 to act as an unbiased steward of the Eclipse open-source IDE and its developer community, the Eclipse Foundation is now home to well over 400 open-source software projects. Users of OSRF software such as ROS may recognise it from ROS’s use of Eclipse Cyclone DDS and the upcoming support for Eclipse Zenoh.
As well as joining the Eclipse Foundation, the OSRF is also joining its Open Regulatory Compliance Working Group. This working group has been formed this year by the Eclipse Foundation to improve methods by which open-source software, contributors, users, and all other involved parties can comply with regulatory requirements. The ORC WG was initially founded to tackle open-source software complying with the EU’s upcoming European Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). The OSRF is proud to join with the Eclipse Foundation and all other members of the ORC WG in ensuring that open-source software can be used safely and in compliance with all necessary regulations around the world. The OSRF will ensure that the needs of robotics developers and users are represented in the ORC WG’s discussions and outputs, keeping open-source robotics possible for everyone, in any capacity, in the EU.
Although ORC WG was the initial trigger for the OSRF joining the Eclipse Foundation, we look forward to additional cooperation with the Eclipse Foundation and many of its projects long into the future.
